George Soros has put a new man in charge of giving away his multi-billion dollar fortune. The hedge fund manager-turned-liberal activist yesterday named Christopher Stone, a criminal justice professor from Harvard, to run his Open Society Foundations.

Professor Stone replaces Aryeh Neier, Mr Soros's long-time lieutenant, who is retiring next year at the age of 74 after 19 years in charge of the foundations. Under Mr Neier, Open Society has given $8bn to causes ranging from promoting democracy in Eastern Europe to lobbying for the International Criminal Court.

Mr Soros set up the charitable venture to use his fortune to promote human rights, health and education around the world.
