IBM has agreed to buy the cloud computing specialist Softlayer Technologies in a deal thought to be worth about $2bn (£1.3bn).

News of the buyout came as Salesforce, the enterprise software company focused on customer relationship management, said it was spending $2.5bn on ExactTarget, a cloud marketing platform. In cloud computing, applications and services are hosted remotely and accessed via the internet.
