China's future is luxurious
'Made in China' could soon mean luxury and glamour and not cheap plastic.
Luxury goods experts at last week's Walpole Luxury Summit in London said that, like Japan before it – which produced cheap electronics before becoming a hi-tech leader – China will eventually make luxury goods to rival those from Europe's fashion giants.
Alison Mary Ching Yeung, who runs luxury brand Mary Ching, said: "I want to move away from the view that 'made in China' is only associated with cheapness."
Marco Bizzarri, the president of Italian luxury brand Bottega Veneta, said: "Our best selling bag in China – the Cabat – is an understated luxury bag with no logo. This is an example of the Chinese not just looking for logos to show off."
