US STOCKS gained for a fourth day on confidence that the Federal Reserve will do what it takes to keep the US growing as economies in Japan and other Asian countries founder. Coca-Cola led the gains.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 114.05, or 1.3 per cent, to 8706.15, its first close above 8700 since 18 August. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index climbed 12.93, or 1.2 per cent, to 1111.60. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 29.52, or 1.7 per cent, to 1800.91. Advancers outnumbered decliners on the New York Stock Exchange.
