WALL STREET weakness dragged German shares down but hefty gains in Deutsche Telekom continued to support its strength. The DAX ended up 76.30 points, or 1.43 points, at 5,400.32.

"The upward urge is holding quite nicely here," one dealer said. "With Telekom just going higher and higher there's enough to match Wall Street, I hope." Telekom shares surged on a healthy outlook after first half results and big Mannesmann gains also buoyed the DAX.
