Amid stench of death, government flees as rebels close in
KIGALI (Reuter) - Rebels singing war songs advanced through northern Rwanda's misty hills last night towards Kigali, as the rump government fled the capital to Gitarama, 25 miles to the south-west. The opposition Rwanda Patriotic Front said 2,400 rebels were about to enter the city. A French officer said the army had not 'a hope in hell' of holding them back. The air in Kigali was heavy with the stench of corpses. Up to 20,000 have been killed in six days. The last few Westerners in the city scrambled to safety, many weeping for Rwandan friends left behind.
