Motoring: Lovely Vauxhall Insignia, Mr Roy Hodgson

Sensible choice: Roy Hodgson and his shiny new Vauxhall Insignia

His captain drives a Porsche 911 Turbo (£110K) and an Aston Martin Vanquish (from £130K), while his top striker owns a Range Rover (up to £100k), a Bentley Continental GT (from £124k) and a Lamborghini Gallardo (from £130K), but England manager Roy Hodgson took delivery of a far more pedestrian vehicle this week. His new motor is a Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer, which at £34,180 is roughly a week's salary for a mid-table Premier League player.

Don't let that or the fact that Alan Partridge drove its saloon version in Welcome To The Places of My Life put you off. The Insignia really isn't that bad a car, and when I reviewed it earlier this year for this paper's motoring slot (ind.pn/N0FuJw) I was pretty impressed. It won't set pulses racing, but it's a sensible choice by the "safe pair of hands" England manager and will get him to games economically and in comfort.

With an £11m fortune amassed during 36 years of football management he could easily afford something far more special so it's refreshing that he's gone for a practical choice of wheels, rather than a speeding-ticket collecting machine.

Could this be the start of the Premier League supercar backlash? Don't hold your breath.
