Jenny Hill has started a mobile dog-grooming business, has a growing family, no vehicle and just £2,000 to spend.

A Car for the Head

Jenny needs a compromise between a working vehicle and family runabout. Essentially she needs a slightly civilised van. There are plenty to choose from, but the Renault Kangoo is as good as any. It is a practical package that is as easy to use around town as a Renault Clio, but with far more load space. It's economical, too: more than 50mpg is possible with the DCI diesel engine. There are plenty on sale for £2,000, which will buy a 2005 example with a full service history.

A Car for the Heart

Jenny could have an adapted van or could just adopt a very spacious and practical people-carrier that does not look like a work vehicle. Indeed, all Jenny needs to do is buy some magnetic signs with her business name on to transform a Citroën Xsara Picasso (above). Yes, that's probably the best compromise. There is lots of room inside and a massive boot with a low loading lip. The seating can be rearranged to get all the equipment Jenny needs on board. Her budget buys a 2003 2.0 HDI Exclusive with a warranty from a dealer.
