Three and a half years after Land Rover first showed an Evoque convertible as a concept car, they’ve finally told us about the production version.

This will be available only as a high-end model, with a choice of Dynamic and Dynamic HSE spec levels – the top two in the range. All versions will have four-wheel drive as standard, too.

You’ll also have a choice of engines – either the 2.0 TD4, in 178bhp form, or the similarly sized 237bhp turbocharged petrol unit.

Either way, the additional chassis work required to keep it rigid, along with the gubbins required to get the hood up and down, add around 270kg to the vehicle’s weight compared to the tin-top Evoque.

Still, the gubbins in question gets the hood up or down in 21 seconds, so there’s no need to fear sudden changes in the weather. It’ll do the job at up to 30mph, so there may however be reason to fear sudden changes in the speed limit.

Land Rover is understandably positive about the vehicle, whose rear seats will accommodate two grown adults without them getting a face full of flies when the top’s down.

More surprisingly, the company’s off-road designers say the Evoque is significantly better than they expected on rough terrain.

That’s not something many owners are likely to find out for themselves, given the Evoque’s trendy it-car status. And given its price tag, too – with the cheapest model costing a cool £47,500.
