We’ve got used to manufacturers making what seem like ridiculously limited production runs of specials. Remember the BMW M4 GTS? The company only made 700 and it’s fair to say that left quite a few potential owners just slightly frustration. But now there is another variant of that special, and they’re making another 200 of them. If you like stripes, now might be the moment.

The avowed aim is to celebrate Marco Wittmann’s success in winning the DTM championship – the German touring car equivalent, the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters.

So first you take an M4 GTS, with its 500bhp turbo straight-six with water injection. That should be good for passing 62mph in 3.8sec on the way to 190mph. You keep the ceramic brakes, dampers you can adjust by hand, and the Cup 2 tyres. You leave out the orange wheels and replace them with something a bit more tasteful.

Then you start adding DTM-influenced kit like the new splitter and flics at the front, and the sideskirts running down the sides. Inside there is a half cage, bucket seats and Alcantara wheel just in case you forgot and thought you were getting into an i3.

Then, of course, there are the stripes. They look pretty stand-out, given the only colour available is Alpine White for the paintwork. If you’ve got the confidence, then they look fabulous.

According to BMW, it will make 200 of these DTM Champion Edition cars, for a global audience. How many will make it to the UK, at a price of around £134,000? If you want one, you may need to move as fast as Marco Wittmann.
