For the first time in its more than 85 year history, Monopoly is making changes to its Community Chest Cards.

The family favourite board game is a classic that has been enjoyed across generations, but the game makers feel it is time to make changes to all 16 Community Chest Cards that include outdated topics like beauty contests, holidays funds and life insurance.

Instead, they want to focus on the more contemporary meaning of ‘community’, which is something that we have all come to witness during lockdown, to produce a game that better reflects the society we live in today.

Monopoly has a long history of involving fans in game developments, and this time they are asking consumers to get involved to help determine what the new Community Chest Cards in all future games sold should include.

Fans can vote for new cards that include options such as “Shop Local”, “Rescue a Puppy” or “Helping Your Neighbours.”

Scenarios that may arise also include being penalised for hosting a party and not recycling the rubbish afterwards or finding a wallet on the street and not returning it. Players may be rewarded for setting aside time in their week to volunteer for an elderly neighbour, getting free cookies following donating blood or donating money to a community centre.

Fans can visit MonopolyCommunityChest.com, from today Thursday 18th March to have their say, selecting their favourites among several options. Voting remains open until Friday 9th April 2021.

Throughout the summer, Monopoly will also be launching activities across real-life communities. ‘Opening up’ it’s own Community Chest, the board game will host events aimed to give back to communities around the UK after a difficult year.

“Since Monopoly became a household name more than 85 years ago, the world has changed and embraced a new sense of community – particularly after the unprecedented year of 2020”, said Anne Leonhardi, Marketing Director North Europe at Hasbro.

“With community being more important than ever before, this year is the perfect time to give fans across the country the chance to show what community means to them through voting on the new set of Community Chest cards – and for Monopoly champion the nation’s philanthropic spirit to give back to those most in need via its Community Chest fund”.

Fans will be able to get their hands on the updated Monopoly, with new Community Chest Cards, from this Autumn.
