Prince Harry announces birth of a baby boy

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have welcomed their first child, a boy born on Bank Holiday Monday, at their home in Windsor.

The birth of the newest royal baby was announced in a statement on the Sussex Instagram, shortly after the palace confirmed to the public the duchess was in labour and that Prince Harry was at her side.

“We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highness The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019,” the statement reads.

According to the palace, the newest royal was born at 5.26am weighing 7lbs 3oz (3.2kg) and the duchess’s mother Doria Ragland was with the new parents.

Like the baby’s grandfather the Prince of Wales and great-grandmother the Queen, the baby is believed to not have been born in a hospital, but rather at the couple’s home Frogmore Cottage.

The location of the baby's birth comes after it was rumoured the duchess planned to give birth at home, possibly with the help of a doula, breaking from a tradition that has seen royals including the Duchess of Cambridge give birth at the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London.

Following the birth of the baby, who is seventh in line to the throne, Prince Harry told reporters outside Frogmore Cottage that he is “over the moon”.

“This little thing is absolutely to die for,” the new father said, before adding: “Mother and baby are doing incredibly well. It’s been the most amazing experience I can ever possibly imagine.”

Prince Harry also said that he plans to make another announcement in a few days’ time so “everyone can see the baby”.

Prior to the birth, the couple had announced that they planned to keep details about the birth of their first child secret.
