Letter: Fallout from the Gandhi dynasty

In His perceptive piece on the forthcoming Indian general election ("Sonia Gandhi keeps India guessing", 28 December), Peter Popham mentions the conclusions of the Jain Commission report into the assassination of the former prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi.

However, these selectively leaked findings, which have placed much of the blame for his death on the regional political party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), have been widely criticised both by the Indian press and non-Congress politicians. Indeed, the Jain report seriously underplays the role of former Indian prime ministers Indira and Rajiv Gandhi, and the Indian secret service in training and arming Tamil militants after 1983, who were subsequently returned to Sri Lanka to continue the civil war against the predominantly Sinhalese armed forces.
