A video of a teenage boy crying after undergoing a successful heart transplant has been viewed more than a million times.

Trevor Sullivan, from Michigan, in the US, received the life-saving operation after waiting nearly eight months for a heart donor.

The 15-year-old's tearful first words after waking up from the surgery were: “I’m so happy. I’ve been waiting for so long. I can breathe again, and talk.

“I feel good,” he told his father. “I feel amazing… I’ve never felt so good.”

Doctors had told Trevor's family that he would not have lond to live without a heart transplant.

Even if he did find a donor, the surgery came with extreme risks - including the danger the transplanted organ does not pump properly and the chance of the body rejecting the donor heart.

According to ABC News, the surgery was carried out in November.

The video, shared by his father Philip Sullivan, was taken shortly after Trevor woke up and began crying out of joy.

Mr Sullivan shared the video with organ donation charity, Gift of Life Michigan, which in turn shared it on its Facebook page.

According to a GoFundMe page set up to help the Sullivan family with the costs of Trevor’s condition, the teenager started feeling unwell in February.

When his condition escalated, he was airlifted to CS Motts Children’s Hospital in Michigan with severe heart failure, where medical staff had to shock his heart twice in a bid to normalise his heartbeat.

He was diagnosed with severe cardiomyopathy, and was put at the top of the transplant list in April, Mr Sullivan told MLive.com.

According to WDIV Local 4 News, Trevor’s recovery is going “very well” and doctors say there are no signs of organ rejection.

Trevor told ABC News: “I really like the video, actually. I think it’s really cool and I wish everyone in the world can see it because it really makes a difference.”
