Destiny; NHL 15; Bioshock, gaming reviews: "Shared-world shooter" is most expensive game ever made

Bungie's new "shared-world shooter", set 700 years in the future, is the most expensive game ever made. Players can take up the mantle of a titan, warlock or hunter – it's effectively a MMO-version of Halo. Despite the world-building, the story is lacklustre at best. But as clichéd as this is, with Destiny its potential is the most promising feature. It's beautiful, the mechanics are incredibly fun and the game is a blast to play. A first-generation next-generation game, but one worth playing, and investing in.

On many occasions the presentation was so realistic it was hard to tell this was a game at all. There are a variety of modes; you can take on human opponents or have a career as an ice hockey pro – though fans may be disappointed some modes from previous versions aren't included. The controls can be a bit tricky, but once you get the hang of it there's some fast and impressive looking hockey. The gameplay itself manages to be realistic – but not so complicated that it is no longer fun.

iOS (£10.49)

BioShock originally came out in 2007 and was a critical darling. Set in 1960 you played the role of Jack following a plane crash. It was a revelatory game – both in the unprecedented mash-up of Art Deco design and with hard-hitting questions of morality. A shame, then, that iOS still cannot handle it. Controls are clunky. The lighting is pitiful. I want to like the game because I want BioShock on the go. But now, in 2014, it is merely a whimper. Another port, albeit of a fantastic game.
