As a drink lover, I always give kudos to brands who can create a kick-ass product in terms of quality while being able to keep things affordable at the same time.

When it comes to rum, there’s been a slight increase on the ‘craft’ side of things during 2017 but nothing which has really captured my attention, until now that is. Last week a new rum launched in the UK, its name is Aluna Coconut and in my humble opinion, it’s delicious.

The first thing to mention is that it’s been purposely created to fill a gap in the market — entering as a fun, unique and quality rum for those who care about what they put in their drink and don’t want to spend a fortune in the process.

Given the people who put together this venture helped build brands such as The Kraken, Sailor Jerry, Hendricks and Black Cow, I think it’s safe to say you know you’re in good hands.

So, what’s in the bottle? A silky blend of rums from both Guatemala and the Caribbean which grace your taste buds with a pure and lusciously addictive toasted coconut.

Although Aluna has that staple sweetness we associate with rums, it’s got a fraction of the sugars found in others on the market, making it a purer and more approachable choice for those trying to keep an eye on what they’re putting in their bodies.

There’s a lot of ‘talk’ around making things ‘healthier’ these days, so let’s delve into exactly why Aluna can make this claim.

The drink itself is comprised of three major components, Caribbean rum, Guatemalan Rum and coconut water.

First sugar cane honey (miel de caña) is fermented with a very specific strain of yeast taken from the pineapple plant. It is then lightly aged in oak to ensure a smoother and more delicate floral finish.

By using the above method, a natural sweetness forms in the liquid, removing the need for bucket loads of sugar to be added to the mix in order to give it that sweet zing.

The next stage sees select Caribbean rums being added into the blend, these create the ‘classic’ notes we associate with rum, all the while adding a little heat and entwining the flavours together as one to create that notorious toasted natural coconut.

The blend is then given time to sit before being cut with natural coconut water to give it an incredibly refreshing, clean and vibrant finish.

I expect Aluna to do pretty well this Summer, at £25 a bottle, a natural shine and some great tasting juice, what’s not to love?
