Marc Jacobs is to become the first recipient of the MTV Fashion Trailblazer Award at this year's Video Music Awards (VMAs).

The MTV award has been announced in partnership with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).

The aim of the accolade is to pay tribute to a fashion designer who "has made an indelible impact within the world of music-artist fashion", a statement released by MTV outlines.

In a post shared on his Instagram Story, Jacobs said he is "proud and grateful" to be receiving recognition as a "fashion trailblazer".

"Jacobs and music are inextricably linked, from tapping Cher and Missy Elliott for his ad campaigns, to dressing fashion icons Lady Gaga, Cardi B and Nicki Minaj," MTV states.

"With a legacy that spans over three decades, Jacobs is a pre-eminent figure in fashion and music, perfectly embodying the spirit of the Fashion Trailblazer Award."

In addition to receiving the fashion trailblazer award, which will be presented to the designer on Monday 26 August, Jacobs and his design team are also working in conjunction with MTV to create a surprise spectacle on the VMAs red carpet.

MTV states that the spectacle will be an "on-the-ground experience", which has been "designed to travel across social platforms".

Several people congratulated Jacobs on becoming the first recipient of the fashion trailblazer award at the MTV VMAs.

"Congratulations!!!!!" tweeted rapper Missy Elliott.

"Congrats to you, you earned it," someone commented on Instagram, while another added: "Well deserved!"

In June, Jacobs collaborated with Miley Cyrus to release a limited-edition pink hoodie, all of the proceeds of which are donated to Planned Parenthood.

The back of the sweatshirt reads: "Miley Cyrus x Marc Jacobs Happy Hippie Foundation", in reference to the non-profit organisation founded by Cyrus which provides support to young homeless people and the LGBT+ community.

The front of the hoodie features a photograph of Cyrus and the slogan: "Don't f**k with my freedom", a lyric from the star's recently released song "Mother's Daughter".

In early April, Jacobs celebrated his wedding to candlemaker Char Defrancesco with a star-studded affair in New York City.

Celebrities in attendance at the soirée included Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Anna Wintour and Rita Ora.
