Once upon a time, wearing too much sparkle was considered a serious fashion faux pas.

Perhaps in part because of the industry’s fixation with minimalism, the past few seasons have been pretty short on glitz. But that was then and this is now.

The hot topic of conversation on the lips of people everywhere, the good vibrations of crystals has taken the industry by storm.

While Victoria Beckham clipped them onto belt loops and included secret pockets for them on trousers, the Olsen twins’ label The Row handed out healing crystals to guests of their autumn/winter 2018 show earlier this year.

But if all this talk of tourmaline and apatite – they’re types of crystal, by the way – is a bit too hippy-dippy for your taste, there is an alternative.

The glint of these spiritual gems has also led to a rising trend for just about anything that sparkles, and just in time for Christmas party season too.

Of course, its tacky tendencies can have a habit of creeping through so it’s important to ensure you stay on the tasteful side of bling.

Bejewelled High Heel Mules, £69.99, Zara

To do so, we suggest taking your inspiration straight from the runway where you’ll find a crystal-embellished item to suit every possible taste.

One of the easiest ways to embrace the trend is with the perfect pair of party shoes, complete with a scattering of rhinestones. At Tom Ford, the jewels encrusted the heel of a kitten slingback while Christopher Kane sent out variations on the classic boot dripping in Swarovski crystals.

Large Earrings, £9.99, H&M

Alternatively, or if you’re in a maximalist mood, additionally, you can add some sparkle to your look with a pair of giant crystal earrings and some hair clips.

A look seen at a number of shows this season including Simone Rocha, Alexander McQueen and Ashley Williams, this styling trick promises to deliver a much needed dose of extravagance to everything from your cocktail dress to dressed-down denim.

French Connection, Crystal Shot Mini Skirt, £85, John Lewis

If this isn’t enough to satisfy your magpie tendencies, you can of course opt for a statement piece such as a skirt or dress covered in colourful crystals embellishment.

However, remember that a little will go a long way so let one item take centre stage by keeping your accessories to a minimum.
