Sure, fashion can be fickle but some trends are determined to stay the distance. And, while it’s too soon to tell which styles the masses will take into 2017, the rising popularity of these key crazes is hard to argue with.

Straight-talking denim

When it comes to jeans, we girls have a lot of choice but there are certain styles that tip the scale in the style stakes; this year, it was the straight leg.

2016 marked a major shift in the denim-scape as skinny jeans died out in favour of authentic, vintage-looking jeans. In fact, this clean and classic style meant that “high rise” and “straight legged” were the most searched-for cut by British shoppers this year.

Oversized everything

Thanks to the likes of Vetements and Hood By Air, the trend for slim, tailored garb took a back seat as fashion got supersized.

Fits are now baggy, forgiving and all of a sudden everywhere. Let’s clear one thing up though; oversized is not the same as big. With this one, it’s all in the detail.

The best silhouettes are ones that hang off the body just so but if you’re going for an elongated sleeve, make sure the body still fits well.

Statement Earrings

Sneaker Pimps

Thanks to the strategic relaunch of the Adidas Stan Smiths, all-white trainers reigned supreme in 2016.

They have done for a while now but, in October, Mintel reported that sales of flat shoes had overtaken heels in the UK for the first ever.

It’s a trend that’s popped up on the soles of everyone from designers to It girls and we’re sure it will continue to be popular in the upcoming year.

Velvet

Love it or hate it, the marmite of fabrics found its favour this winter with UK sales of velvet clothes increasing by 45 per cent from August to December.

Whether it was plush bag, booties or a top-to-toe two-piece, velvet made sure it didn’t go unnoticed.

You might think this sumptuous fabric is resigned to the cooler months but, if the SS17 shows were anything to go by, it’s here to stay.
