American supermarket chain Kroger and robotics company Nuro have teamed up to announce the launch of an autonomous grocery delivery service in Texas this spring.
The service will deliver to customers across four local ZIP codes from two Kroger stores in Houston.
Customers will be able to access the service seven days a week and shop via Kroger.com or the Kroger app.
Deliveries will be based on availability with same-day and next-day options available.

According to Nuro, customers will receive notifications via text message when their order has departed the store and its final destination. Shoppers will also be able to track their delivery live on the app.
As for the safety of the public, the company states that its custom vehicle has a remote operator monitoring at all times, "capable of taking over in the event of a potential unmanaged risk".
The service follows a trial run in Scottsdale, Arizona last year and has expanded to include Nuro's custom vehicle, R1, making it the US’ first fully-unmanned delivery service available to the general public.
Nuro co-founder Dave Ferguson says of the Texas service: “We’ve seen first-hand in Arizona how enthusiastic customers are about getting their Kroger groceries delivered by a Nuro self-driving vehicle.

The service comes two years after English online supermarket Ocado tested grocery delivery by electric vehicles as part of a bid to cut its carbon footprint , reduce congestion and keep noise levels to a minimum, especially in residential areas.
In November 2018, the Scottish government announced Scotland’s first self-driving bus trial which will see five autonomous single decker buses travelling across the Forth Road Bridge between Fife and Edinburgh this year.
The driverless grocery deliveries will be offered at the Texas stores on South Post Oak Road and Buffalo Speedway and cover zip codes including 77401, 77096, 77005 or 77025.
Deliveries include a £4.49 ($5.95) flat fee; no minimum order.
Nuro plans to introduce the next generation of the custom driver-less vehicles later this year.
Customers in Scotsdale will continue to have access to delivery through Kroger's established service available through frysfood.com .
