Doritos advert featuring son coming out to his father goes viral

Two-minute advert is based on a true story

An advert for Doritos has gone viral for its moving depiction of a son coming out to his father.

The short film, which was released over Christmas in Mexico,  is based on a true story and titled “El mejor regalo", which translates to “the best gift” in Spanish.

The video depicts a young student, Javier, travelling home for Christmas with a friend from university named Manuel, who didn’t have anywhere to go for the festive season.

While on the way home, Javier calls his father to let him know that he is bringing Manuel home, but does not say that they are romantically involved.

The advert shows the three of them spending time together and the father begins to notice that his son and Manuel, who are seen cuddling one another and holding one another, are more than just friends.

In one scene, the father is seen searching Reddit for advice, asking: "Hello, I'm a 52-year-old divorced father and need some help," he writes. "I think my son and his friend are a couple and he won't tell me.

"How can I let them know that everything is OK?" he writes.

At the end of the advert, the father and Javier are in the kitchen and he tells his son he wants to have a word with him, but then says: “I love you”.

Javier replies: "What you want to tell me is that you love me as I am?" to which his father nods and the two embrace.

The advert concludes with the following on-screen message: "The best gift for these holidays is accepting everyone the way they are."

The video has now been viewed more than 14 million times on YouTube, with a subtitled one garnering more than 114,000,  and prompted thousands of comments on Twitter.

“Ok, I didn't expect a Doritos advert to make me cry, but hey, 2021 has been a hard year,” tweeted one person.

“Well, this @Doritos commercial has me in my feels,” added another.
