Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Pictureville, Bradford (01274 732277) 7.30

The invention of the video was a wonderful thing for film fans as much as for couch potatoes. Instant access to favourite movies came as a giddy pleasure, but there are minuses: no audience, no expectation and no sense of scale. Nothing compares with watching images on the big screen in a packed auditorium. Watching Spielberg's breakthrough sci-fi pic on video is plain daft. The Oscar-winning cinematography alone demands a cinema screening. This is the director's cut (three minutes shorter, surprisingly) with a tightened central section and additional interior shots of the mother ship.
