Did you see Love Affair, the 1994 movie starring Warren Beatty and Annette Bening? I thought not. Hardly anybody did. US box office was so bad it only made it over here on video. In fact, this all-too Nineties remake of Leo McCarey's 1939 film of the same name should have left well alone. McCarey himself had remade it in 1957 as An Affair to Remember. Even if you've never seen it, chances are that the romantics among you will have heard of it as Nora Ephron used it as a major plot idea in her equally weepie picture Sleepless in Seattle. Now, no-one would pretend that this is an "important work", but you'll need a good supply of Kleenex to get you through it as Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr fall in and out of love. Unusually, it is the woman who appears to run some of their best scenes together. McCarey let them improvise the dialogue, something Kerr was much better at than Grant.
