An Eye On... public toilets

Britain: Judges of Britain's Loo of the Year awards said that too few people complain about sub-standard toilets. Award director Richard Chisnell said: "Turnover for an establishment can double because of a good loo."

Belgium: A disposable dog toilet was one of the exhibits on show at the Brussels 46th annual inventors fair. Visitors to the show were also able to learn the merits of a wet-nappy detector.

Singapore: There were 187 nominations for the Cleanest Public Toilet in Singapore, but no winner was announced in the "coffee shop" category where facilities were found to "have an unsatisfactory level of cleanliness".

England: A campaign has begun to save a derelict gents' toilet from demolition. The "Westoe Netty", as it is known in South Shields, has been immortalised in a work by Tyneside artist Bob Olley, whose picture of men standing shoulder-to-shoulder in it has brought a memory of home to many exiled Georgies. Mr Olley is urging people to buy the bricks at pounds 2.50 each and save them until the lavatory can be rebuilt elsewhere.
