Singapore celebrates second record month
Visitors to Singapore jumped 17.6 percent year-on-year in January, according to figures released February 26 by the Singapore Tourist Board, setting a new record for arrivals in the country.
In January, 908,000 people visited Singapore, the highest number ever recorded for the month. 772,000 people visited during January 2009, but despite the country's hotels being 13.9 percent more full, average room rates fell from an average of $207 (€108) to $187 (€98).
Indonesia, China, Australia, Malaysia and India were the most frequent visitors, accounting for 54 percent of visitor arrivals. South Korea and Malaysia, however, showed the highest year on year increase in visitors, jumping 54.5 percent and 53.4 percent respectively.
The news from Singapore's Tourist Board comes a month after the country's airport, Changi International, posted a record December. In December 2009, 3.83 million people flew in and out of Changi, the largest number in the airport's history.
