Richmond complained of feeling unwell after the game and was seen by Newcastle's doctor before paramedics were called. He was taken to an ambulance in a wheelchair and driven to the coronary care unit at a city hospital, understood to be the Royal Victoria Infirmary, shortly before 11pm.

A Newcastle spokesman confirmed that Richmond had been taken to hospital after a "bad turn" but it was thought his visit was precautionary. The Bradford chairman had just seen his side's remarkable comeback at St James' Park, where they fought back to reach level terms after falling three goals behind.

Alan Shearer's double and Daniel Cordone had given the Magpies a 3-0 lead only for the Bantams to draw level through Ian Nolan and two goals from Ashley Ward. But Bobby Robson's men sealed their victory with a late winner from Steve Caldwell on his full debut for the senior side.

The Premiership's bottom club, Derby, found some relief with a 3-0 home win over Norwich City, thanks to Rory Delap, Craig Burley's penalty and Malcolm Christie.

Fulham saw off their First Division rivals Wolves as they came from behind to secure a 3-2 win at Craven Cottage. Temuri Ketsbaia put Wolves in front but two beautifully worked goals from Luis Boa Morte and one from Luis Saha gave the Cottagers a 3-1 lead. They then hung on despite Simon Osborn's strike in the last minute.

Stoke had a last-gasp winner from their Norwegian substitute Rikhardur Dadason on his debut as they saw off First Division Barnsley 3-2.
