Decca Aitkenhead on clubs

Legends is one of those clubs which have been been running successfully for so long now that there's a danger of assuming you know all there is to know about it. Tucked in the heart of Mayfair, it already, rightly, enjoys a reputation as a sophisticated venue for a slightly older crowd - but the past few months have seen some major developments.

Friday nights, traditionally run by a variety of different promoters, have been taken over by a formidable triumvirate of young women (something still all too rare in clubland), for their new night, Fur Coat & No Knickers. Billed as a classy bit of fun for a Friday, FC&NK attracted a friendly, dressy crowd to its opening night last week, and offered - the key to a successful Friday night - an event as well-suited to drinking upstairs with friends as to dancing the night away below. Underwear adorned the walls, and DJs Derek B, Scott Mae and others played perfect party house - nothing too taxing, nothing too cheesy either.

Tonight, they present The One and Only Wonderbra Party, in conjunction with Breakthrough, the breast cancer charity, and clubbers are invited to bring along their old bras to swop them for the "Hello Boys" variety at the "Wonderbra exchange".

The venue lends itself beautifully to the glamour set attracted by such nights, having undergone a complete refurbishment earlier in the summer. Upstairs, the bar has been opened out into a stylish, airy drinking area (the glass front opens onto the street, lending a continental feel), cleverly lit to be both crisp and intimate, and ideal for those seeking a club atmosphere without being overwhelmed. Below, a circular bar and thoughtfully designed walkways manage to create a sense of space and a fluidity which all too many smaller clubs lack.

The One and Only Wonderbra Party, tonight 10pm till late, pounds 10, Legends, 29 Old Burlington Street, London W1 (0171-494 2271)
