The Independent's campaign of support for our declining insect and plant life, much of it threatened but out of the public eye, is making waves with the public.

More than 2,000 people visited the website of Plantlife, the wild plant conservation charity, at the weekend, after our Saturday issue was published with a promise of 20p for every copy sold to be divided equally between Plantlife and Buglife, the Invertebrate Conservation Trust.

Matt Shardlow, Buglife's director, said the Saturday Independent had been "a massive boost for our hopes of what we can achieve for bugs." He said the donation was likely to be the charity's second biggest.
