Teddy Sheringham revealed as tree on The Masked Singer

Teddy Sheringham has become the latest celebrity to be unveiled on the ITV singing competition The Masked Singer.

The former England footballer was revealed to be the performing tree after losing the sing off against the octopus.

Sheringham said he had had “sleepless nights” trying to remember the lyrics to Will Young’s "Evergreen" and "Lovely Day" by Bill Withers.

He added that he chose to do the show for his children: "I've been asked to do everything over the years but always declined. I saw the show that aired in the States and thought I'd love to do that for my kids.

"I'd love to wear the costume at one of my kid's birthday parties, that would be special."

Following the show's launch on 4 January, many viewers branded it "the worst" they had ever seen.

The singing contest, hosted by comedian Joel Dommett, sees celebrities perform underneath an elaborate costume, meaning they can only be identified by their voice.

Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall, Ken Jeong and Rita Ora make up the judging panel.

So far, celebrities unmasked on the show include EastEnders star Patsy Palmer, former home secretary Alan Johnson and The Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins.
