Trailer for Luther Series 5 starring Idris Elba

The fifth series of Luther has proven a rating success for the BBC, as the finale attracted 4.6 million viewers and won its Friday night (4 January) slot.

Starring Idris Elba as the eponymous haunted rogue detective, the drama managed a 21.7 per cent audience share and peaked with 4.7 million.

The episode beat Jeremy Clarkson's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire on ITV, which notched up 3.7 million, including catch-up.

Billy Connolly: Made In Scotland, on BBC Two, was seen by 2.2 million viewers and The Big Fat Quiz Of Everything on Channel 4 had 1.7 million.

The premiere of Luther's fifth series had also been a success, being the most-watched TV show on New Year's Day, beating the Doctor Who special.

Elba's character was joined by his murderous sidekick Alice Morgan, played by Ruth Wilson, in the series. Multiple characters reached their grisly demise during the finale, leaving many viewers shocked.

Luther was broadcast across successive nights beginning on January 1.
