Saturday Night Live: Larry David splits Twitter joking about Holocaust during opening monologue

One social media user wrote: 'Nothing about the Holocaust will ever be funny'

“You tolerate me. You really, really tolerate me,” Larry David opened his Saturday Night Live monologue with.

Unfortunately for the Curb Your Enthusiasm creator, some people on the Internet are done tolerating his sense of humour.

Midway through the opening, David began talking about the recent sexual harassment allegations currently making the news, joking that many of those featured in headlines are Jews.

“I don’t like it when Jews are in the headlines for notorious reasons,” the Jewish comedian said. “I want Einstein discovers the theory of relativity, Salk cures polio. What I don’t want Weinstein took it out.”

After some laughter from the audience and self-depreciating humour, David made controversial comments on the holocaust.

“I’ve always been obsessed with women, and I’ve always wondered, if I’d grown up in Poland when Hitler came to power and was sent to a concentration camp, would I still be checking out women in the camp? I think I would,” joked David in his monologue.

“Of course, the problem is there are no good opening lines in a concentration camp. ‘How’s it going? They treating you OK? You know, if we ever get out of here, I’d love to take you out for some latkes. You like latkes? What, what is it? Me, or the whole thing?’ ”

While the audience wasn’t sure to laugh or grimace, many Tweeters were quick to criticise David, one saying: “Nothing about the Holocaust will ever be funny.”

However, there were also those who defended David, some pointing out how the situation sounds almost like a Curb episode.
