Game of Thrones Season 8 Official Tease: Crypts of Winterfell

While Game of Thrones fans have a million questions heading into season eight, the showrunners have cleared up one ongoing mystery.

David Benioff and DB Weiss have confirmed that Ser Pounce, the cat belonging to the former King Tommen Baratheon, has died.

Not only did the feline perish, but Tommen's own mother, the spiteful Cersei, killed the animal.

“Cersei hated the name ‘Ser Pounce’ so much she could not allow him to survive,” Benioff told EW. “So she came up with her most diabolical [execution]. Ser Pounce’s death was so horrible we couldn’t even put it on the air.”

Weiss jokingly added: “If you buy the super-extended, super-charged Game of Thrones box set that comes out, the death of Ser Pounce will be in there. Just one whole episode devoted to the death of Ser Pounce.”

Ser Pounce disappeared following the season six finale, which saw Tommen commit suicide after Cersei killed his beloved Margaery Tyrell. However, the showrunners have hinted that perhaps Cersei's hatred of the cat was not the only factor in deciding not to work with the actor behind Ser Pounce again.

“That cat was really not fun to work with,“ Benioff said. “There’s a reason the phrase ‘like herding cats’ came into existence.”

Weiss agreed: “Dogs generally do what you ask them to do if they’re smart and well trained. Cats have their own agenda.”
