Game of Thrones: Season 7 Finale Preview

While this week's episode of Game of Thrones was largely focused on the action taking place beyond the wall, there were plenty of other tantalising moments fans will be stewing over in the days leading up to next weekend's finale.

One such moment occurred over in Winterfell where tensions between Arya and Sansa Stark were heightening no thanks to Littlefinger's planted letter in last week's episode.

'Beyond the Wall' saw Arya alert Sansa to her knowledge of the letter expressing her belief that she is essentially team Cersei. Sansa rightfully protests her innocence (she was forced to write that letter back in season two), but Arya remains unconvinced and in a climactic scene, threatens Sansa after she attempts to retrieve the letter concerned it'll lose her favour with the Northern lords.

In doing this, Sansa comes across a bag containing Arya's 'faces' - a collection of the people she's disguised herself as. “What are these?” Sansa asks to which Arya replies simply: “My faces.”

But whose faces does Sansa discover inside the bag? One immediately recognisable one is Walder Frey who Arya killed in season seven's memorable cold open. The other faces, however, are harder to distinguish although The Verge has given it a good go.

A candidate is Meryn Trant, the man who killed her sword instructor Syrio Forel all the way back in season one. Arya stabbed him in both eyes upon finding him in Braavos (he was on her kill list) however, ruling him out as a candidate is the fact his face doesn't bear any stab wounds. Still, if there's one thing the bag of faces proves it's that the exact magic behind how Arya pulls off her Faceless tricks are all rather unclear so perhaps it is Trant after all.

Other than him, the obvious money is on the faces belonging to Frey's sons, Lothar and Black Walder, whose remains Arya baked into a pie to feed to their father before revealing herself and killing him. Beyond this, the faces could belong to nameless men Arya has killed along the way for no reason other than to hide in plain sight.

The big question now is will Arya believe Sansa enough to keep her away from the bag? Time will most certainly tell when season season draws to a close next weekend with a finale that may or may not drop three huge revelations in the space of one dramatic scene.

Game of Thrones airs in the US on HBO every Sunday where it is simulcast in the UK on Sky Atlantic at 2 am. It is repeated that same evening on both Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
