I heard "Angels" in 1981, soon after I left university, when I was in the Ravishing Beauties, supporting The Teardrop Explodes. I heard it on The Godlike Genius of Scott Walker (the song was originally on Scott 4). "Angels" was, and is, the most profoundly romantic record I've ever heard. It has this amazing Sixties feel: strings, harpsichord, and a small rhythm section tapping away quietly. But the real thing for me was Walker's voice, which is so heartfelt and rich it brought tears to my eyes. It still does.

n Kate St John's first album 'Indescribable Night' (All Saints) is out on Monday
