Classical audiences can be divided into those who just like to hear the music and those who enjoy pre-concert talks and discussions. For the latter, especially those with a penchant for Mahler (right), there's a chance to listen to some of the world's leading authorities on the man and his work in a day-long symposium as an offshoot of the Royal Philharmonic's Mahler: The Spectacle series. Chaired by Gilbert Kaplan, speakers include Daniele Gatti, Donald Mitchell and Norman Lebrecht. In the evening comes Mahler's 4th Symphony from the RPO conducted by Daniele Gatti.

Symposium: Royal College of Music, London SW7 (0171-589 8212) 9.15am; concert: Royal Albert Hall, London SW7 (0171-589 8212) 7.30pm
