Beverley Folk Festival, various venues

This beautiful historic market town in East Yorkshire has hosted the festival since 1983, when it was launched by the local White Horse Folk Club.

It's grown over three decades into a deliciously eclectic lineup of translatlantic roots music. Friday headliners Steeleye Span pick songs from their 21-album repertoire; Abigail Washburn's clawhammer banjo (above) spars with Nashville pianist Kai Welch on a set of old-time songs; and the fabulous Lady Maisery weave harmonies on a set of "diddling" tunes from their album debut, Weave and Spin. Into the weekend, Skye's folk ravers Peatbog Faeries top Saturday's bill with the politically astute folk-pop of Chumbawumba.

Sunday brings you Martin Carthy and his peerless song repertoire, with Virginia's Furnace Mountain delivering a pure stream of Appalachian music, the Carrivick sisters refreshing the palette with a Devonshire take on bluegrass, and Coope Boyes & Simpson's a cappella English folk harmonies.
