Album: Nneka, No Longer at Ease, (Four / Yo Mama)
No Longer at Ease, indeed. From the opening track – the spookily atmospheric "Death" – this Nigerian singer-songwriter delivers her own brand of edgy, politically motivated, post-soul (rather than nu-soul).
Reminiscent at times of Shara Nelson-era Massive Attack, and the bass-driven hip-hop eclecticism of Meshell Ndegeocello, every song is a further gripping experiment in this woman's restless search for her own voice. A seminal work? Who can say at this point, but it certainly feels like it right now.
