Album: Keith Jarrett, Sleeper (ECM)
Jarrett's European quartet with Jan Garbarek, Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen gets stereotyped as a lighter alternative to his US band, but this hitherto unreleased 1979 Tokyo concert shows that they are up there with the very best in the whole of jazz.
All seven tracks are interesting, but "So Tender" and "Chant of the Soil" are miraculous: out-there dream music of incredible drive, sensitivity and, yes, funk. Replay them for the rest of your life.
