Album: Hannah Peel, The Broken Wave (Static Caravan)
It borders on the twee. That it doesn't cross the frontier is the reason this is worth your attention.
HP is Irish, she writes wistful, romantic, occasionally abstract songs, which are produced in Shoreditch by a member of Tunng, without much air but plenty of clatter (and vintage synths) in the mix. Crucially, it belongs to the modern world of dodges, evasions and trompe-l'oreille effects. Peel sings as if butter wouldn't melt but her melodies are strong. Interesting debut.
