Stormzy releases powerful animated video for ‘Superheroes’ to inspire schoolchildren

Rapper recently donated £500,000 to scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds

Stormzy has released an animated music video for his single “Superheroes”, accompanied by an inspirational speech for schoolchildren.  

“I think it’s important that you guys understand how powerful you are,” the grime star said, addressing students. “Despite the colour of your skin, despite where you come from, despite your religion, despite whatever it is that you feel may be holding you back; you are a superhero.”

He added: “I wanted to make this video to inspire you guys, to let you know that the sky is the limit. To let you know that all those things inside of you, make you incredible.”

Directed by British director Taz Tron Delix, the animated video honours British artists such as Dave and Little Simz as modern-day superheroes.

The lyrics themselves also pay tribute to Malorie Blackman’s young adult race novel, Noughts and Crosses, US tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams, and children’s show Tracy Beaker.

The video comes in the wake of Stormzy donating £500,000 to the Black Heart Foundation to provide educational scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Brit award-winner had pledged earlier this year to give away £10m over the course of a decade to help combat racial inequality in the UK.

This first donation will award cash grants to around 50 students, supporting those who need financial aid to take part in education in any form, not just university.

Anyone from an under-resourced and under-represented community is able to apply for a scholarship at the Black Heart Foundation.
