Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch managed to prank band mate Ad-Rock for 15 years

'I was freaking out'

The Beastie Boys have offered fans a small window into the high jinks the band got into during their prime.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Adam Horovitz (known as Ad-Rock) shared the story of how he became the target a 15-year-long prank by the late Adam Yauch, who died in 2012.

Horovitz began his story by recounting the unusual gift he received from a fan during one of the band's gigs back in 1992.

"This guy kind of cornered me," he said. "He just looked odd. He had, like, big, huge teeth and really long arms. He cornered me and he said: 'I really want you to have my ring.'"

Despite his hesitation, Horovitz eventually accepted the ring and took it home with him, leaving it on a shelf and swiftly forgetting about its existence. However, on a train to a show in DC, Horovitz discovered that the ring had mysteriously transported itself into his bag.

What could have been dismissed as a strange coincidence took a turn in 2007, when the band were once more on tour and, as Horovitz described: "I go to my backpack and the ring's in there. So I was freaking out."

He added: "About a week later, Yauch pulled me aside on tour and went: 'Hey man, I put that ring in your bag.' But it was 15 years later."

Michael Diamond also took the opportunity to share the origins behind the band's name, which is actually an anacronym for "boys, entering anarchistic states towards inner excellence."

Diamand and Horovitz appeared on the show to promote Beastie Boys Book, which mixes first-person recollections and contributions from the likes of Wes Anderson, Luc Sante, and Amy Poehler.
