Almodovar film headed to the Broadway stage

A new musical based on the film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, directed by Pedro Almodóvar, will be featured in the 2010-11 season of shows produced by the Lincoln Center Theater in New York City. Antonio Banderas starred in the 1988 film.

The theater has created the musical Women on the Verge with director Bartlett Sher, who won the Tony Award for South Pacific, Lincoln Center's longest-running revival production. Sher also directed the Tony Awardwinning musicals The Light in the Piazza and Joe Turner's Come and Gone.

This adaptation of the film, written by Jeffrey Lane ( Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), was developed in workshops over the last year with Almodóvar and the composer/lyricist David Yazbek ( The Full Monty).

Women on the Verge follows the romantic and personal tales and trials of a group of women in Madrid. Previews begin in October 2010 at the Belasco Theater on Broadway and opens the night of November. 4.
