Letter: Sorry organ saga

Sir: Evidently those "traditionalists" shocked by the appointment of a Roman Catholic as organist of Westminster Abbey (report, 28 May; letter, 31 May) have only told one side of the story. Not only is the acting Abbey organist, Martin (not James) Baker, a Roman Catholic and a former member of the music staff at Westminster Cathedral, two other "candidates" for the Abbey mentioned in your report, Stephen Cleobury and David Hill, preceded James O'Donnell as organist of Westminster Cathedral, despite themselves being members of the Church of England.

It is unfortunate if those people seeking, for whatever reason, to prolong the publicity about this sorry saga at the Abbey are also indulging in a few double standards.
