1997 Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet, pounds 6.99, widely available. A blend of nearly two-thirds shiraz and one third cabernet, this is a succulent young raspberryish red with undertones of liquorice spice and accessible, opulent fruitiness. Best vintages: 1997, 1996, 1992, 1990.

1996 Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz, pounds 9.49, selected Tesco, Somerfield, EH Booth, Morrisons. Elegant regional shiraz with raspberry and red-berry flavours underscored by peppery spiciness. Best vintages: 1996, 1994, 1990, 1986, 1982.

1996 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, pounds 8.99, selected, Asda, Co-op, Sainsbury's, Tesco. Youthful, powerfully aromatic Barossa shiraz redolent of damson and mulberry with supple-textured tannins. Best vintages: 1996, 1994, 1990, 1988, 1986, 1985, 1983 1977.

1996 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, pounds 12.99, Co-op, EH Booth, selected Safeway, Sainsbury's, Tesco. Smoky-rich cedar and vanilla aromas with a core of cassis and bittersweet, chocolatey richness. Best vintages: 1996, 1994, 1990, 1988, 1986, 1983, 1982, 1977.
