Pros outweigh cons in the debate for more 3D theaters

The upgrading of theaters to 3D began happening at a faster pace after the huge success of director James Cameron's Avatar. Some theater managers have hesitated with the expense costing $150,000 on average.

When film theaters debate whether to switch to 3D cinemas, they weigh the expense of the equipment against future ticket sales.

With ticket sales historically slow in spring, 3D has helped venues survive during the difficult period. One cinema in the state of Virginia added a 3D theater and improved ticket and concession sales in March, totaling more than $72,000, a 400 percent increase from last year.

With over a dozen more 3D films being released this year, many venues see 3D as a competitive edge against other cinemas.

Of the 5,942 member theaters in the US, only 10 percent of screens are currently 3D capable, and the number is growing at 100-150 screens each month.
