It’s a big day in film as the Academy Awards nominations are announced live at 1.30pm GMT, with British stars expected to earn nods in the major categories.

Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones are hotly-tipped for their roles in The Theory of Everything, while Benedict Cumberbatch has been widely praised for his portrayal of codebreaker Alan Turing in The Imitation Game.

David Oyelowo is in line for a nomination for Martin Luther King biopic Selma, with Rosamund Pike and Meryl Streep hoping for actress nods for Gone Girl and Into the Woods respectively.

Should Streep earn an acting nomination, it will be her 19th – breaking her Oscars record.

The shortlist will be revealed in Los Angeles at lunch-time (5.30am state-side), with the best picture category set to include anything from five to ten films. In the past three years, nine movies have been nominated, but there may well be a shake-up this time around.

Existential comedy Birdman is expected to lead the nominations after rave reviews from film critics, but Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel will be strong competition after Golden Globes success last Sunday.

Actor Chris Pine will announce the nominations in all 24 Oscar categories along with Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs and directors JJ Abrams and Alfonso Cuaron.

This year’s star-studded Oscars ceremony takes place in Hollywood on Sunday 22 February.
