I was rooting for Michael Keaton to get Best Actor on Sunday night. He put everything on the line in Birdman, risking his reputation as he allowed his washed up career to be lampooned and parading around in his tighty whities.

Ultimately, Eddie Redmayne won for his very Oscary portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Most of us saw it coming, but apparently not Keaton.

In a moment singled out and Vined, you can see that he already had his acceptance speech in his hand as the winner was read out – which he was then forced to stuff back into his breast pocket.

Fortunately Birdman had the last laugh, taking home Best Picture, with director Alejandro Iñárritu letting Keaton say a few words.

"This has been a tremendous experience, he told the audience, a little flustered.

"These guys are as bold as bold could be, it was just a tremendous honour for me – look, it's great to be here who am I kidding, this is just great fun, thank you very much."

Birdman took home four awards on the night, equalling Grand Budapest Hotel's tally with Whiplash finishing in third award count-wise.
