Steve Carell set to join Minecraft Movie

Of all the video games to create a film from, perhaps Minecraft is one of the strangest. For those who haven’t played Minecraft, the basic premise is to survive in a blocky world: a sandbox to roam around in without any narrative (the Telltale series withstanding).

However, Warner Bros. has decided to press on with a film adaptation of the game with Wonder Woman writer Jason Fuchs penning the script and Rob McElhenney directing.

According to Variety, the studio is looking to sign their first actor to the project: Steve Carell. In recent years, Carell has balanced starring in comedies - such as Anchorman 2 - with dramas such as Foxcatcher and The Big Short.

Created by Mojang AB founder Markus Persson, Minecraft was launched in 2009 for PC and can now be played on almost every modern console imaginable.

Warner Bros acquired the rights to the franchise in February 2014 and the movie is being produced by Roy Lee (The Lego Movie) and Jill Messick (Mean Girls).

Other recent video games currently being adapted for the big screen include Assassin’s Creed, Tomb Raider, and Uncharted. Earlier this year, Warcraft was released to middling reviews.
