Watch the brand-new teaser for Star Wars: Episode IX

The trailer for Star Wars IX was unveiled on Friday, leaving fans in various states of excitement and emotion.

The clip for The Rise of Skywalker played for the first time during the Star Wars Celebration convention, revealing the film’s title.

Plenty of people were shocked to hear Palpatine’s laugh at the end of the clip, marking the character’s surprise return.

Others were moved to see Carrie Fisher, who died in December 2016, in the trailer. Deleted scenes from The Force Awakens were used to further Leia’s story without resorting to CGI, according to director JJ Abrams.

“I got goosebumps during the #StarWars teaser trailer when they showed a scene with Carrie Fisher and the voiceover said: ‘We’ll always be with you. No one is ever really gone,’” one person wrote.

“I don’t usually get emotional over trailers, let alone teasers, but being in that arena and seeing a story that has existed my entire life coming to an end. And of course, Carrie Fisher. I’m just... ooph,” someone else tweeted.

Some expressed how much they’re looking forward to the release of the film on 20 December, and one person said the trailer had made “all [their] love for the series come rushing back at once”.

Many used memes to express their surprise after hearing Palpatine’s cackling laugh at the end of the teaser.
