Saoirse Ronan boards second Ian McEwan adaptation after Atonement

She'll star in the cinematic take on the Booker Prize-winning novelist's On Chesil Beach

Looks like Saoirse Ronan is an Ian McEwan fan. Following 2007's Atonement, which landed the actor her first Oscar nomination, she'll be returning to the Booker Prize-winning author's fold with On Chesil Beach (via Deadline).

Set in 1962, the novel sees a newly married couple on their honeymoon, tucked away in a small hotel on the Dorset seaside; here they reflect on their disparate economic backgrounds, one the son of a schoolmaster and the other daughter to a wealthy industrialist, and struggle with sexual intimacy.

The film will feature The Hollow Crown director's Dominic Cooke's feature film debut, as part of Number 9 Film's slate of prestige projects, having produced last year's triumphant Carol. Producer Elizabeth Karlsen said of the film: "It’s an extremely exciting prospect to be reunited with Saoirse Ronan on such a beautiful and heartbreaking project."

Many may have forgotten Ronan's role in Joe Wright's Atonement, which she landed at 12 years of age, as the young girl who's lie irrevocably damages the lives of others; probably even more have forgotten the film also features Benedict Cumberbatch in an early role, as the manipulative Paul Marshall.

We'll see whether Ronan's bid for this year's Best Actress Academy Award, for her performance in Brooklyn, will come to fruition when the Academy Awards take place 28 February.
